I just got back from Surrey Cancer Clinic. I have been employed by Mom to drive her and Dad to the clinic from now on. As you all know, dad has prostate cancer. The surgery he had a couple years ago didn’t get rid of it. It did help to slow it down. The doctor said that the surgery only helps for 3-5 years. But this was the case for dad. His cancer has come back sooner. The Doctor did a full exam and after I was in the room with mom and dad to listen and talk with the doctor. He explained a few things. First, dad has 2 treatments that he can pick. First one is chemotherapy, which means he would have to go to the clinic up to 5 times a week for 2 months. Second is radiation which would be once a week.
Now, I asked the big question, how long? What is the benefits of each treatment? Will it help him?
The chemotherapy will only take 2 months but afterwards it will only lengthen his life by 2-3 months. Radiation will help him when he needs pain relief. The doctor said that since it isn’t in the bones as of yet, dad doesn’t need any treatments. So this is good. This means that he will be around a bit longer. The 3 of us talked and decided that the rest of the family would agree that the chemo is not worth doing. Dad, himself said that he doesn’t want to be sick all that time and wasting his days doing chemo for an extra couple months. He wants to enjoy the time left.
So as it sits for now, he has a bone scan in October to see if its in the bones. If its not then he keeps going as is for another 6 months and does another scan. If the scan shows that its in the bones he will then start radiation treatments when the pain starts.
Once its in the bones he will have up to a year left. This isn’t great news but the family needs to know this and be ready for it. In the mean time…this can all change if unexpected things happen. He is 80 already and we never know when he could be gone.

Thanks for this update, Karin, and for being willing to drive with Mom & Dad, when needed!
Mom had already brought me up to date earlier today! I guess we have all been expecting this for a while!
Let’s enjoy the time he has left to the max, for as long as possible!
We just came from their place and had a great visit. Took Wally’s Mom with us and had dinner together!
We all had a good time!

Thanks Karin for the update on Dad and his situation. We were wondering if anyone knew anything while camping this weekend. Glad you could be there, driving them back and forth. I wished we lived closer so that I could help as well. I guess all we can do is to leave it up to God for whatever he for sees in Dads future. We need to be with him and spend a lot of time with him in the mean time. Thanks again Karin!!!
